Sedation Dentistry

From a young age, many of us have negative associations with dentist visits. We have images in our minds of uncomfortable chairs and stressful procedures. However, modern techniques allow patients to have almost any procedure in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Even root canals have little more than mild discomfort at most. Still, there can be a great deal of anxiety for many patients about dental visits and treatments. That is why we offer sedation dentistry for our patients at Maz Endodontics.
At Maz Endodontics, we pride ourselves on providing patients with the care they need in a comfortable environment. We use only the latest techniques and technology for all of our treatments and procedures. Whether you need a root canal or an extraction, you can count on having a safe, effective, and relaxed experience. What is Sedation Dentistry?

In general, sedation dentistry refers to using anesthetic to ease your comfort during your treatment. You can have light sedation or heavier sedation, depending on your needs. During your initial appointment, you will have a chance to discuss what kind of sedation is best for you and your procedure.

Sedation dentistry was designed for patients who experience high levels of anxiety when visiting the dentist. Using various medication, you are kept comfortable and relaxed throughout your treatment.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right For Me?

Sedation dentistry can benefit a wide range of patients. Everyone is different though, so it is best to discuss your options with Dr. Maz. However, below you can find some signs that sedation dentistry might be right for you.
  • You have a lower pain threshold
  • Sitting still in a dentist’s chair is difficult
  • Your teeth are extra sensitive
  • You have a difficult-to-control gag reflex
  • You need several treatments or procedures at the same time

Types of Sedation Dentistry

The type of sedation that is right for you will depend on several factors. We always take into account three major factors.
  • Your current health and medical history
  • The type of procedure you will have
  • Your concerns about anxiety during treatment
Depending on these three factors, you will be able to have one of the following types of sedation dentistry.

IV Sedation

You receive a measured amount of sedation through an IV drip. The amount is easily adjusted and regulated carefully to match your needs.

Oral Sedation

This sedation is taken in the form of a pill. The exact medication can differ depending on your situation, but the outcome is always a state of stress-free relaxedness. Depending on the dose, you may be semi-awake or fully asleep.

Inhaled Sedation

Also called “laughing gas,” you inhale a light medication that keeps you relaxed for the whole procedure. It is often combined with a local anesthetic to ensure a completely comfortable process.

Is It the Same as General Anesthesia?

Sedation dentistry is often different from general anesthesia. With general anesthesia, you are completely under. Though effective, this type of anesthetic puts quite a bit of strain on your body. It is excellent for invasive surgeries in order to keep you comfortable. However, each of our services at Maz Endodontics can be done with lighter sedation. There are less drugs used, so your body experiences far less stress. And so do you!

What Procedures Can Sedation Dentistry Help?

All of our procedures at Maz Endodontics can work with sedation dentistry.

Root Canals

For root canals, you can have complete comfort with a lighter sedation. General anesthesia is rarely needed for this treatment. During your appointment, Dr. Maz will go over which options will best work with you and your needs.

Tooth Extractions

The sedation that is best for a tooth extraction can vary. For deeply impacted wisdom teeth, you could benefit from heavier sedation or general anesthesia. However, many patients can have tooth extractions with only light sedation and feel no discomfort at all!

GentleWave

Our cutting-edge alternative to a root canal, GentleWave already is extra comfortable. However, we understand that the idea of any treatment can be stressful. Be sure to speak with Dr. Maz about your concerns, and we will find a solution.
